Warriors beat Malawi in dead rubber match |

10 September 2007 By Andrew Mutasa Zimbabwe's warriors put on a fine performance at Barbourfields to put an end to a miserable losing streak in the Africa Cup of Nations Campaign that cost former coach Charles Mhlauri his job. The team now under caretaker coach Norman Mapeza avoided finishing bottom of Group 12 in the qualifiers for the 2008 Nations Cup by beating the Flames of Malawi 3-1 on Sunday. Former warriors captain Mapeza fielded a side with locally-based players for the game and it paid dividends as Kingstone Nkatha scored in the first half before Richard Mteki and Method Mwanjali completed the rout in the second half. Essau Kanyenda scored the consolation for Malawi. Midweek it was reported that Malawi coach Stephen Constantine had resigned but it seems he changed his mind after a dispute with the FA was resolved. Morocco finished top of the three-team group to deny Zimbabwe what would have been a third consecutive appearance at the tournament after failing to do so for many years after independence. andrewmutasa@nehandaradio.com Nehanda Radio: Zimbabwe's first 24 hour internet radio news channel.
