| Recall of parliament will not derail talks |

20 August 2008 By Never Kadungure Officials from the opposition MDC have said the reconvening of parliament despite ongoing power sharing talks will not necessarily mean an end to the dialogue process. Speaking to Nehanda Radio on Wednesday a senior official said the MDC did not object to the reconvening of parliament itself but only the appointment of cabinet would break one of the rules of the Memorandum of Understanding. "The swearing in (of parliament) would take place on Monday or Tuesday to enable new legislators to execute [the] mandate they were given by the people," Austin Zvoma, a parliamentary clerk, told state television. The major complication is that once parliament sits under the constitution a cabinet is supposed to be appointed. Political commentators say the move to recall parliament was calculated to put pressure on MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai who has so far refused to accept a junior role in a proposed unity government. South African President Thabo Mbeki is expected to travel to the Zimbabwean capital, Harare, this week to break the deadlock.
