25 January 2008 By Fortune Tazvida Zimbabwean born Nancy Jirira is on course to becoming the first black councillor in the United Kingdom town of Camden. Jirira a worker with the National Health Service has been selected by the Liberal Democratic party to stand as a candidate in the Fortune Green by election. The seat fell vacant after the death of Councillor Jane Scholflin last month. The election set for Febrauary 21 is all but considered a formality given the area is a stronghold of the Liberal Democrats. Ms Jirira although born in Zimbabwe has lived in West Hampstead (UK) since 1974. She has already started her campaign by pledging to fight for post offices that have been earmarked for closure. Flick Rea the Lib Dem deputy leader said Jirira, 'is not another white man in a suit. She has a wonderful approach with people.' The party has 22 seats on the council and only one is held by someone from the ethnic minority. What are Jirira's chances of winning this by election?
