Archbishop Ncube accused in dodgy adultery lawsuit

Pius Ncube

17 July 2007

By Staff Reporter

Hardly a few weeks after calling on the United Kingdom to invade Zimbabwe to force a change of government the Archbishop of Bulawayo Pius Ncube seems to be on the wrong end of Mugabe's vengeance.

On Monday court officials accompanied by a state television crew served summons on the Archbishop. The summons allege he had an affair with a secretary whose husband is now demanding damages in a civil suit.

Ncube's lawyer Nicholas Matonsi said the whole drama was part of an orchestrated attempt to embarrass Archbishop Ncube, an outspoken critic of President Robert Mugabe. Ncube was said to be in his office at the St Mary's Cathedral in Bulawayo when the state organised entourage descended on him.

The woman at the centre of the controversy is Rosemary Sibanda and her husband Onesimus Sibanda is reported to be demanding US$160 000 in damages. The state broadcaster is claiming the woman has already admitted to the affair.

Ncube himself is reported to have told journalists 'I will not answer this question concerning my private life, Yes, I did take a vow. There are a whole lot of other circumstances that take place in a person's life. I would not be able to answer those items,' he said. The ZBC broadcast showed an interview with Sibanda in which she said condoms were used. A lawyer for her husband also told state television that there was proof of the affair.
